Introduction
An ancient medieval village inhabited by a mere six hundred souls, the tiny hillside community of Aielli overlooks Abruzzo's verdant Fucino basin in the Province of L'Aquila. The hill Aielli rests upon is actually in the plain of a former lake, Lake Fucino, in the Marsica region of L'Aquila.

History and Culture
A short forty kilometer drive from L'Aquila, Aielli was first mentioned in 1280, its name deriving from the Latin Aellum. During the Middle Ages it was referred to as castrum Agelli, was heavily fortified, and was later annexed to properties of the Count of Celano. Unfortunately, many parts of the town were heavily damaged by a heavy earthquake which took place in 1915.

Churches and Museums
Chiesa di S. Rocco and Chiesa di S. Adolfo
The beautiful Chiesa di S. Rocco is another impressive structure popular with Aielli's visitors, as is the nearby Chiesa di S. Adolfo at Aielli Stazione, built in the 1930's and holding many works by the famed sculptor Arturo Dazzi.

Historical buildings and monuments
The Cylindrical Tower
The town's impressive fourteenth-century rounded stone tower, known for the part it played in a much larger medieval fortification built to protect the community in that bygone era, and built by the famous Ruggero, Count of Celano, is a distinctive landmark which beckons Aielli's visitors as they approach from afar. Offering a remarkable view of the area, the tower also houses a popular astronomical observatory which is open to the public, as well.
