 History and Culture
An axe was found near Altavilla Silentina which dates back to Neolithic times. Greeks arrived at the Sele River in the 9th century. Seduced by the environment they continued exploring the land and founded a town called Carilla. The Lucans built the first villages. Agriculture was rich in this area, and during the Roman Era, many goods were shipped to Rome. Hannibal is said to have destroyed Carilla during the Punic Wars. Another famous name tied to the region is Spartacus. Joined by his gladiators, he lead an unsuccessful uprising near Altavilla Silentina.
The land lay deserted and marshy for several decades after the fall of the Roman Empire. But when the Normans came along, lead by Roberto il Guiscardo, they founded the town of Altavilla. The town's advantageous situation on a hill was no accident. Guiscardo chose this spot especially because of its relative safety. The town was fortified during this time, with a wall and towers. When Guglielmo Sanseverino lead an uprising against Federico II, the towers were destroyed. Hundreds of men died during the fighting. One young boy named Roberto Sanseverino fled to the Pope's court, and when he became an adult he returned to the place where he was born, and rebuilt the town. The year was 1254.
Feudal times arose about a decade later. Notable family heads who ruled Altavilla Silentina during this time included Martino de Dordano and Giacomo Colonna. Both men did much to improve the town.
Epidemics like smallpox and malaria ravaged Altavilla Silentina during the 19th century, killing much of the town's population. But once the town recovered, new industries were created, and life in Altavilla Silentina was better than ever. That all changed during World War II when the town was occupied by the Germans, and heavily bombed. After the war, many new homes were constructed, and local farmers were given some land from the large estates.
