Introduction
Holiday makers have been flocking to this coastal town on the Italian Riviera for the past hundred years. In 1915 the Grand Hotel opened, gracing the city with a glamourous new address. Magnificent villas dot the landscape, and many architecturally exquisite buildings line the city streets. But it's not just glitz that make this town worth a venture, its unique blend of alpine landscape and pebbly coast give it its unique, magical feel.

Sheltered by Cap San Martino, the Arenzano bay is framed by beautiful hills and pine forests. The Appennine mountains provide breathtaking scenery and fabulous hiking. And the waters off the pebbled shore are divine.

Many important religious sites are nearby, and outdoor activities like horseback riding and sailing are readily available.

History and Culture
Once home to seafarers and shipbuilders, Arenzano was divided in two during the Middle Ages. Arenzano Sottana was the region near the sea, while Arenzano Soprana was up in the higher elevation, otherwise known as the Terralba. Fortifications were built during the 16th century when the town was the target of pirate and barbarian raids. Arenzano's own pirate, Captain Romeo helped protect the town during the war of 1746, resulting in his legendary status.

Many industries sprang up in the region in the early 1900s, including shipbuilding, paper, and furnace, but still, living was tough for most of the farmers in the region. But soon, tourism took center stage, and continues to be the area's leading industry.

Churches and Museums
Living Museum of Environmental Technology (MUVITA)
Interactive exhibits, multimedia games, and scientific shows educate visitors on ecological issues dealing with climate change and energy. Established in 2002, it's the first science center devoted to the environment in Italy. Located in a 16th century building, the museum is divided into seven sections which focus on different technological topics, and includes an area for temporary exhibits, a scientific library, a video conference room, and a chemistry laboratory.

Parish Church S.S. Nazario E Celso
The grand baroque facade of this church dominates the Arenzano landscape. Constructed in the early 18th century, the church had a dome with paintings by Francesco Semino, but it was destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt after the war and a new dome features the same frescoes reproduced by Massiglio. The church also includes artwork by Orazio De Ferrari.

Oratorio di Santa Chiara
A wooden crucifix and statues of saints can be found in this oratorio adjacent to the church of S.S. Nazario and Celso.

Sanctuary of the Infant of Prague
The Princess Polissena Lobkowitz of Prague presented the Carmelite monks at the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, in Arenzano with a statue of the Infant of Prague, in 1628. But the sanctuary was not established until 1904. It has become one of the world's top destinations to worship the Infant of Prague, known for granting miracles to those who pray to him. Large sculptures depicting scenes from Carmelite history, and a nativity scene are a couple of the Basilica's highlights.

Historical Buildings and Monuments
The Historical Center
Protected by a fortified wall, the city's old town center is home to a variety of wonderful old stone buildings and alleys.

Places of Interest
Villa and Park Negrotto Cambiaso
The Marquis Tobia Pallavicino first built a villa here in the 16th century. Constructed on a large plot of land, the area around the house was used for farming. Nearly three hundred years later, the Marquise Luisa Sauli Pallavicino converted the farmlands into gardens. Planted in the style of an English garden, the park includes an exquisite greenhouse designed by Lamberto Cusani, and a small “medieval town.”

Parco Naturale Regionale del Beigua
Those looking to spend some time in nature should make an excursion to this natural park. The largest of its kind in the region, it's full of fantastic trails, and diverse landscapes. It forms a sort of “balcony” over the sea, resulting in extraordinary panoramas.

The Whale Sanctuary
This refuge for whales covers the area of the Mediterranean Sea from the east and west sides of Liguria, to Corsica. Sperm whales, pilot whales, Cuvier's whales, and dolphins are regularly spotted off the coast here.

Events
Festa di Sant'Isidoro - July 7
Animals are blessed on this holy day, and a procession runs through the town in thanks for a good harvest.

Feasts of Saints Nazario and Celso - July 28

Fiesta di Santa Chiara - August 12
A crucifix is processed to the sea in the evening during this festival. Then the water and the sailors are blessed, and illuminations are placed upon the sea.

Two Days March Mare e Monti - September
Each September people from all over Liguria meet in Arenzano to walk the paths through the Appenine Mountains to celebrate the beauty of this breathtaking region.
