Introduction
Centrally located in the L'Aquila province, Avezzano is the main commercial, industrial and agricultural center of the Marsica area. The city once stood directly on the shores of Italy's largest central lake, Lake Fucino, but after its drainage in the Nineteenth Century, the wide fields which became available for cultivation enabled Avezzano to undergo a period of rapid growth. Then, in 1915, the city was nearly completely destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake. Although it took many decades following this catastrophe for the city to fully recover, Avezzano has risen again to become one of the most prosperous towns in the Abruzzo region today.

History and Culture
Famous for the tunnels constructed by Emperor Claudius during his unsuccessful attempt to drain Lake Fucino, Avezzano's name is said to derive from the Latin “Aveanum” or “Ave Giano” (“Ave Jane”) in reference to the temple for the Roman God Janus at the town's gates. Its modern name first appeared on a document referring to a feudal residence here in 1343, the town playing a substantial administrative and economic role in the region well into the second half of the Fifteenth Century. After the reign of the Orsini, Marcantonio Colonna converted the town's castle into a impressive palace in 1561 while granting the town a substantial piece of land near Lake Fucino. Nearly two centuries of foreign influence then followed in which a succession of Spanish, Austrian and Bourbon rulers had the say over the town, or more precisely, the Kingdom of Naples. It was only after the unification of Italy and the building of the railway line Roma-Sulmona that Avezzano began to assume the modern appearance it has today.

Lying 2,100 feet above sea level in the rich Fucino plain, Avezzano's 40,000 inhabitants live in a city rich in cultural history, art and architecture. And although the city was completely rebuilt after the earthquake, Avezzano is anything but a faceless non-entity. After the destruction, the town was rebuilt along straight, parallel streets with wide green areas and fine villas in the so-called Liberty style, the most interesting of these buildings being Avezzano's town hall, the Torlonia Palace and surrounding park complex, and the elegant court building, which was designed and built by architect Luigi Gallo in 1930.

Churches and Museums
The Saint Bartholomew and San Giovanni Decollato Cathedrals
Avezzano is now home to many modern churches and the older cathedrals of Saint Bartholomew and San Giovanni Decollato are certainly worth a visit. The work on Saint Bartholomew began in 1919 and was finished in the 1930s. The smooth façade is made of distinctive travertine marble and the three large doorways open up into high and separate naves which are all well-lit through the church's beautiful stain-glass windows. San Giovanni Decollato was rebuilt on its original Fourteenth Century location in the typical baroque style of that era.

The Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietraquaria
The Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietraquaria is one of the most popular religious sites in the area. The Avezzanesi have welcomed many a famous personality here over the centuries, among them a recent visit made by Pope John Paul II. Passing the Stations of the Cross along Mount Salviano to the sanctuary, a long procession takes place in honor of the Madonna here on the 27th of April every year. Constructed in the late medieval period, the church has been rebuilt many times in an effort to give it its present rustic touch.

The Lapidary Museum
Avezzano's Lapidary Museum was founded in 1888 and holds a collection of sculptures and sculpture fragments from the Roman era and architectural elements from the medieval and renaissance periods. An interesting collection of tombstones from all around the Marsica region can be viewed here, as well. Many of these items only came to light after the draining of the lake in the Nineteenth Century.

Historical buildings and monuments
The Orsini-Colonna Castle and the Gallery of Modern Art
Although nearly completely lost to the devastation of 1915, the grand Orsini-Colonna Castle, originally including 5 towers and a wide moat, has been rebuilt incorporating the original castle gateway as well as a beautiful collection of windows in Renaissance style. It is now a popular venue for public conventions and other cultural exhibitions, the top floor boasting the spacious Gallery of Modern Art with a permanent collection of pictures and the sculptures selected from among the “Avezzano Award” competitions which have been held here since 1949.

Earthquake Monument
At the foot of Mount Salviano stands an impressive monument built in remembrance of the devistating earthquake of 1915. Sculptured by the Marsican artist Pasquale Di Fabio, it is a moving memorial to the nearly 30,000 victims who died at that horrible event.

Places of Interest
Cunicoli di Claudio
The remains of the hydraulic masterpiece of “Cunicoli di Claudio” (Claudius's Tunnels) built by Emperor Claudius in antiquity are still visible on the Fucino plain and offer an interesting insight into ancient Roman building techniques.

Events
