Introduction
Located 50 kilometers north-east of Naples, Benevento is perched upon a hill which rises to a height of 400 feet. Two rivers, the Calore, and the Sabbato meet at this historic, university city, which was once an important stop along the Roman roads of Appia and Traiana. The city is home to a variety of historic sites, wonderful architecture, and a wealth of cultural events.

Arrival
Plane
The closest airport is in Naples, the Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli. It lies 90 kilometers to the north, and accommodates flights from several Italian cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, and Venice, as well as flights from around Europe. EasyJet runs direct flights out of London, Paris, and Berlin; and major airlines like Lufthansa offer flights from Munich. Frequent shuttle bus service connects the airport to the train station, where you can catch a train to Benevento.

Train
Trains run very frequently from Naples to Benevento. The journey takes roughly one hour and a half.

Car
Just over an hour's journey from Naples, Benevento can be reached by traveling east on A16/E842. Take the Benevento exit, and follow the Raccordo Autostradale Benevento-A16, to town.

History and Culture
Settled by the Samnites, who fled here after being defeated by the Romans in 314 BC, Benevento was initially called Maleventum, which translates to “bad events.” Many legends surround the city's founding. Some attribute it to Diomedes. A Roman colony established itself at Benevento in 268 BC, they made the city bigger, and more beautiful under the instruction of Emperor Augustus, most famously constructing the Arch of Trajan. The Goth king Totila captured Benevento in 545 AD, but several decades later, King Autharis of Lombardia reconstructed the city, and made it a duchy. The Normans invaded in 1047, but only ruled for six years. In 1053, Emperor Henry III forced them to turn the town over.

Later, the Normans attacked again, and Pope Leo IX, who ruled Benevento at the time, formed a great army. The Normans were victors in a great battle, but they swore their allegiance to the holy leader, and invited him back to Benevento.

In the 18th century Ferdinand I ruled over the land, and in 1806 it was conquered by Napoleon.

Churches and Museums
The Cathedral
Constructed in the seventh century, the cathedral's facade dates from the 14th century, and includes a depiction of the Lamb of God in a mosaic. It includes a bell tower dating from 1279, and wonderful bronze doors with 72 sculptures cast in bronze, which depict scenes from the life of both Christ, and the bishop. Frescoes from the 10th century adorn the cathedral's medieval crypt.

The Basilica of Saint Bartolomeo
Pope Benedict XIII consecrated this church in 1729, and brought Saint Bartolomeo's remains here personally.

The Church of Saint Domenico
Benevento's finest example of Baroque architecture can be seen with this church, located in Piazza Guerrazzi. Once a convent, it is the site of a garden which houses the Hortus Conclusus, home to a Mimmo Palladino exhibition.

Church of Saint Sofia
A beautiful medieval structure, constructed in 762, this church includes frescoes from the 7th century, and columns from the Temple of Isis.

The Samnite Museum
Located near the Church of Saint Sofia, this museum includes sections for archaeology, medieval, modern, and numismatic art. It also contains an area for prints and design.

The Basilica of the Madonna della Grazie
Vincenzo Coppola designed this church.

Historical Buildings and Monuments
Trajan's Triumphal Arch
One of the most well-preserved Roman monuments, this arch is a symbol of Benevento, and was constructed in honor of the tenth anniversary of Trajan's empire. Scenes depicting times of peace and times of war adorn either side of the marble structure.

Rocca dei Rettori
Comprised of a castle and the palace of papal governors, this structure was constructed at Benevento's highest point. Pope John XXII founded it in 1321.

The Roman Theater
The Emperor Hadrian constructed this theater during the Roman Era. It could hold 10,000 people, and stretched to a width of 90 meters. Today it is host to open air performances of opera and theater.

Palazzo Terragnoli
