 Introduction
Intense archaeological activity has been going on in Buccino since 1996 when the territory of the ancient city of Volcei was discovered. Many important discoveries were made which have helped researchers piece together the history of the ancient settlement.
The Dardano-Melara park is also a popular attraction for visitors. Covered in beech trees, mushroom hunters can often be found searching the woodlands.
Arrival Plane
The closest airport is in Naples, the Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli. It lies 120 kilometers to the north-east, and accommodates flights from several Italian cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, and Venice, as well as flights from around Europe. EasyJet runs direct flights out of London, Paris, and Berlin; and major airlines like Lufthansa offer flights from Munich. Frequent shuttle bus service connects the airport to the train station, where you can catch a train to the Buccino-S. Gregorio Magno station.
Train
There are a handful of trains that connect Naples to Buccino. The journey takes roughly two hours. Passengers should disembark at Buccino-S. Gregorio Magno.
Car
One hundred twenty kilometers from Naples, Buccino is accessible by car, by following the A3 Motorway to the Sicignano degli Alburni exit.
Bus
The Buccino-Eboli-Salerno bus line carries passengers to and from Buccino, to Eboli, and Salerno.
History and Culture
Count Giorgio Lamagna governed Buccino in 1300 when he rebuilt the castle, and many fortifications.
Churches and Museums
Buccino has been undergoing archaeological excavation for many years, and the ancient artifacts found during those digs are on view at this museum.
Church of Sant'Antonio Abate
Constructed in the Baroque style of architecture, the most important aspect of this church is the multi-colored altar found within, constructed of stone from the region.
Santa Maria della Grazie Monastery
Many small altars and chapels can be found within this old Franciscan monastery. An important artifact is a stature of the Immaculate Conception dating from the Baroque period.
Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Behind this church's brick facade, one will discover statues made of wood, dating from the 14th century, and an 18th century pipe organ.
Church of San Giovanni Gerosolimitano
A painting of Jesus Christ being baptized by Saint John the Baptist, painted by Gaetano D'Agostino is one of the treasures found within this church.
Historical buildings and monuments
Constructed during the Middle Ages, this ancient castle, located in the archeological park, was home to Papa Urbano VI.
Eremitani di Sant'Agostino Monastery
A cloister housed within this building was constructed in 1476. Twenty-three Corinthian columns which had their origins on a Roman temple, surround it. The town hall now occupies the structure today.
Places of Interest
Established in 1996, this archaeological park has been the site of many important discoveries that have helped piece together the history of Buccino. Several tombs, shops from the Roman Era, a necropolis, and a forum have all been unearthed.
Parco Dardano-Melara
This natural wonderland surrounding Buccino is filled with magnificent beech trees. Rivers full of trout also flow through the woodlands, and many varieties of mushrooms grow here.
Events
A celebration of classical, jazz, and pop music is held in Buccino's historic center every summer.
Homemade Pasta Festival - August
The people of Buccino pride themselves on their wonderful culinary specialties. Pasta is one of them, and each year a festival is held in honor of the staple dish.
