Introduzione
Positano seems to be standing, leaning against the jagged mountain rock face, with many multicoloured houses that seem to be built in a single cluster, all on top of each other. The town is very unique and incredibly attractive, capable of attracting attention from many visitors. It is the kingdom of many flights of little steps, of narrow passageways enlivened and coloured by wonderful shops, lively bars and cafes, and restaurants that specialise in seafood. However Positano preserves many artistic and archaeological treasures, for example, the ruins of a Roman villa, or the three defence towers that were built by the Viceroy of Spain - Peter from Toledo in the 16th century. The cathedral of St. Maria Assunta dates back to more recent times, as its original structure was almost completely rebuilt in 1700. The impressive inside wall painting in the dome dictates the church, which is divided by pillars, into three separate aisles. The beaches of Positano are formed from volcanic sand and small stones, which lend to the background.

The main beach of Positano is large and located at the foot of the town, rocky mountains separate the main beach from smaller seashores: Fornillo beach, situated just to the left and La Porta and Arienzo beaches just to the right of the main beach. There is a large cave of La Porta, where the remains of Palaeolithic Era (utensils and hunting weapons) have once been found. Positano was discovered by the Germans and, primarily by the English and Americans, during the first years of the 20th century. At that time, the town was quite uninhabited. However, it significantly developed in our century, also from an economic point of view.

Many small semi-handicraft firms in clothing originated, and from there, Positano fashion (a typical and unique style) became famous. John Steinbeck wrote a famous report of Positano in May 1953 and the town now remains to be one of the major national tourist resort. Many old tales are remembered; in particular, one captivating tale of the transportation of Virgin Mary's picture across the stormy sea. Opposite the beach of Positano, shocked mariners clearly heard a voice repeating telling “put down, put down”. The boat docked and as soon as they put the picture down on the beach, the storm began to disappear. There are many versions of how Positano adopted its original name. However, the name “Positano” probably derived from Roman freedmen, the Posdii. Positano was really a Roman colony and a well-known holiday resort. Until 1000, St. Vito was in possession of Positano. From the dominance, it was later liberated, by its people. Positano was economically wealthy in the 17th century and only at the end of 1700 was Positano again a royal town.

Come Si Arriva
Plane
We suggest two airports: Napoli and Fiumicino, Rome. If you arrive at the International Airport of Naples, we would suggest that you book a taxi. This is the most comfortable way to get to the Amalfi Coast. Otherwise, you can take a bus (company named Curreri) from the airport to Sorrento. From Sorrento, you need to take another bus (company named Sita) to the Amalfi Coast.
If you arrive at Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino, Rome), you can also book a taxi. Otherwise, there is a train service that runs from Fiumicino to the Centre of Rome. Termini and Tiburtina station, from these two destinations you need to take another train, directly to Naples. From the Tiburtina station there is a direct connection to Sorrento and also to Praiano using a bus service called Marozzi.

Train
From the North: The recommended station is Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) (Naples). From there, you need to change trains in order to reach Sorrento. This is a small train (company named Circumvesuviana). In the square, under the station you will find a Sita bus that will go the Amalfi Coast. These directions are the same for arrivals in Capodichino's airport. Take a taxi or a bus to the train station of Circumvesuviana, in Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi). Then take the train to Sorrento.
From the South: The station (from the South) that is the closest, is Salerno. From Salerno, you can either travel to Praiano by road (Sita bus or Taxi) or you can arrive by sea.

Sea
From Salerno: Daily departures from the dock of Salerno (5 minutes walking distance from the train station). An alternative solution can be to arrange a taxi boat to pick you up.
From Naples: Daily departures to Positano and Amalfi. We would advise you to disembark in Amalfi or in Positano and take the Sita bus onto your destination. An alternative solution can be to arrange a taxi boat to pick you up.

Car
From the North: Take the “Reggio Calabria - Salerno” motorway and stay on this road until you reach the exit for Salerno. Follow signs for the Amalfi Coast. Continue on this road past Amalfi, after which you reach Praiano. There is also another option: Do not get off the motorway in Salerno but continue on this road until you reach Castellamare di Stabia. Take the exit at Castellamare di Stabia. From here, follow the same directions as those stated “by car from the North”.

Between Caserta and Naples there is a traffic detour towards the A30 motorway with a sign post stating “Amalfi Coast”, DO NOT take this road, follow straight ahead until you reach Naples. During the holidays and in particular during July and August from 11.00 until 13.30 and from 17.00 until 19.00 the road that connect Castellammare to Sorrento is very busy, we suggest you, after you leave the fast road in Castellammare, to follow the signs to Amalfi Coast via Gragnano - Agerola - Furore, to avoid heavy traffic. You will spend approximately the same time of the first route.

From the South: Take the “Reggio Calabria - Salerno” motorway and stay on this road until you reach the exit for Salerno.

By Taxi:
You can book a transfer from the airport or the station to the Amalfi Coast contacting a local taxi company

Transport
Mainly in the centre of Positano, you will have to walk by foot, then for outside there is a circle bus that makes several stops and runs quite often

History and Culture
It is told that Positano was founded by inhabitants of Paestum fleeing a raid of Buckwheats (cruel pirates which prevailed in mediteranean at that time). However, there are more certainty as in the Roman origins, although vestiges were found going up with the Paleolithic time, indicating origins older of this country. Positano is in a valley, its coastan accesses are among most beautiful of the Amalfitan Coast. In the center of the village, going down towards the beach always full of tourists, camps the cupola of Santa Maria Assumption, church of a rare beauty which contains sculptures of the XIII and XVIth centuries.

It was a vacation resort during the Roman empire, as the discovery of villas attests it, of which a barrel found lately in 2004. Innumerable “perrons” (staircases) are very typical, on the basis of the top of the country and arriving at the bottom, on the beach. The main beaches are the Great Beach and Fornillo, accessible by foot. The others are the Door, Arienzo, San Pietro Laurito, mainly accessible by the sea.

Positano was a prosperous port of the Republic of Amalfi in the 16th and 17th centuries. But since half of 19th, the city lived difficult periods. More than half of the population emigrated, the majority to the United States. Positano was a relatively poor village of fishermen during the first part of the 20th. Then, it started to attract a great number of tourists from the Fifties. Today tourism is the principal industry of Positano.

The sarrasines towers
The medieval times saw the construction of many towers to locate Buckwheats, culprits of many incursions which endangered the local population. The first tower is apart from the commune of Positano, on the locality of the Point Small bell, where finishes the Amalfitan Coast and starts the Sorrentine coast. When over there Arabic were seen, one launched the first signal, a blow of gun, and then the tom-tom moved with the second, third turn and so on, passing by Positano and all the Amalfitan Coast. In this manner, the inhabitants could take refuge on the heights (thus the forts of Montepertuso and Nocelle were created). Indeed Buckwheats, skilful navigators and combatants, were very bad to penetrate on the heights, and were more easily contestable by the local population.

Legend of the Madonna Assumee and the name of Positano
The legend tells that many years ago, about the XIIth century, a boat which transported a framework of the Madonna Assumpted, of Byzantine type, by furrowing Tyrrhenian sea waters, sailed close to the village of Positano. It reigned there flat calm, when the sailors, the Benedictins monks, heard a voice which said “POSE POSA”... (or stop on this place), coming from the framework of the Virgin Mary. Thus they approached the shore. The Positanians draw their name from it, they took the framework of the virgin and they carried it in the Church which today is located on the central place of the village, Piazzetta of the Mills. They left it there, but in the morning, it had miraculously disappeared... and was found close to the sea, on a field of ginestre. It was thought that there had been a miracle, since the table would have moved all alone. Whereas Positanians started here the construction of the new dedicated church, precisely, to Marie, celebrated on August 15 of each year. Today, the church is one of most beautiful of Italy. Among the abbots who were there the abbey of Positano, the cardinal Vincenzo Marie Orsini, who became then the Pope Benoit XIII.

Modern History
Leaving aside the tourists that crowd all the tourist resorts during the summer months, throughout the rest of the year Villages built at the headlands and in the bays, surrounded and overlooked by terraces of vineyards, citrus orchards and vegetable plots, appear to be enchanted places where time has stood still. After Positano there are three little islands, called Li Galli, and as the legend suggests....in the beginning there were the Mermaids, who tried to cast a spell over the insensitive Ulysses with their song, only to be turned to stone for their humiliating disappointment, the three crags of the Sirenusae. The islands have been owned by the famous Russian choreographer Leonide Massine for forty years, then acquired in 1988 by the ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyevt. The coast line appears particularly wild and solitary and this languidness and seduction of it have been always the inspirer Muses of artists, musician and writers such as: Arthur Meadows, Giovanni Lanza, Achille Vianelli, Angelo Della Mura, Franco Zeffirelli (with his villa in Positano), Lawrence Olivier, Liz Taylor, Carla Fracci, Liza Minnelli, Placido Domingo, Alberto Moravia, John Steinbeck, Roman Vlad, Eduardo De Filippo, Wagner Greta Garbo, Leopold Stokovskj, etc.
