 Introduction
Suspended over the azure waters of Southern Italy, Arco Naturale is a natural point for visitors to observe all that makes Capri beautiful. The Arch is a naturally occurring rock formation that appears as a gateway down the hillside. Over 12 meter wide and suspended roughly 18 meters above the ground, it forms a natural bridge between the two pillars of rock. Once a large limestone cave, years and years of exposure to wind and sea water eventually eroded away the cave but left the arch. The cave was hollowed out by the same erosive elements that eventually left the arch.
This became a tourist must see when visiting Capri. This reputation was only enhanced by the contribution of several 19th century artists. The artists made intricate engravings upon the arch, only adding to its appeal. It became a favorite landmark for travelers in the era of Romanticism.
Various tour group visit this site, as well as nearby Matermania Grotto. Visiting the site is free.
 History
This cave was slowly etched out of the rock outcropping by the elements of wind and water. Wave action wore away at the rock, eventually breaking away the cave. The arch is actually hundreds of feet above sea level and was created in relatively recent geological times which is about 1-2 million years ago.
Capri itself was once part of the mainland. Geological surveys and archaeological findings confirm this theory. Human presence on the island can be dated back to the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
An invasion of French troops in January 1806 led to the subsequent British invasion that May. Capri was turned into a powerful naval base and the building program caused heavy damage to many important archaeological sites. Luckily, Arco Naturale was isolated enough to avoid damage. Another kind of invasion, the tourism boom of the 19th century, brought European artists, writers and other celebrities to the area.
