 Introduction
Known locally as i Frari, this is one of the greatest churches of Venice. Dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, it has many masterpieces from the Venetian Renaissance. Composed of brick in the Italian Gothic style, it is deliberately plain in accordance with the Franciscan emphasis on poverty and austerity.
The interior is almost sparse because of its size. Many historical and artistic treasures adorn every corner, but the large dimensions make it seem light and airy. It contains the only rood screen still in place in Venice. Titian's Madonna di Ca' Pesaro in the left aisle is especially interesting. The Virgin was modeled after the artist's wife who died in childbirth. The artist can be honored at Titian's tomb. Titian died in 1576 of the plague.
In the Frari's sacristy is Giovanni Bellini's triptych Madonna and Child with Saints from 1488. The Corner Chapel features Bartolomeo Vivarini's altarpiece St. Mark Enthroned and Saints John the Baptist, Jerome, Peter, and Nicholas.
The church is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am til 6pm and on Sunday from 1 til 6pm. Entrance is 2 euros, or 8 euros with Chorus pass. There are free tours in English occasionally offered during the high season months.
 History
The Franciscans were granted the land to build the church in 1250 and named St. Mary the Glorious . Construction began shortly thereafter, but the building was not completed until 1338. The small church that was already in place was replaced with a much larger church. The church was consecrated in 1492 by Pietro di Trani, the Bishop of Telesino.
The Bell Tower was begun in 1361 by Jacopo Celega and was finished in 1396 by his son Pietro Paolo. The campanile was actually the second tallest structure in the city after San Marco.
The Frari became the parish church of the Vicariate of San Polo-Santa Croce-Dorsoduro. With its popularity, the church grew and extended and. It reached its final size in the 16th century and still has many parishioners.
