 Introduction
The Ca' Pesaro is a baroque marble palace facing the Grand Canal of Venice. It was designed by Longhena with large, heavy columns. This is much different than most of Venice which has much more baroque and Byzantine inspired structures.
The palace now houses two museums, the first of which is the Museo d'Arte Moderna. Also known as the Museum of Modern Art, there are works by Chagall, Kandinsky, Klimt, Miró, Henry Moore, Umberto Boccioni, Morandi, and Filippo De Pisis. Most of the works are from the XIXth-XXth era.
On the top level is the Museo d'Arte Orentale, the Museum of Oriental Art. Most of the collection is from Japan, but there is other works from China, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. The museum contains around 30,000 objects which were brought back from a trip to Asia in the 19th century by Prince Henry of Bourbon-Parma.
The museums were open from 10 am to 5 pm and are closed on Mondays and on May 1st, December 25th and January 1st . Admission is €5.50 and is free for children under 12.
 History
The palace was designed by Baldassarre Longhena in mid-17th century. Building began in 1659, complete with a courtyard. The prestigious facade on the Grand Canal was finished in 1679. Longhena died before completion in 1682, but the construction was completed by Gian Antonio Gaspari in 1710. Several changes were made, but the construction is mostly consistent with the original design.
After trading hands several times, the palace was turned over to the city on the condition that it be used to exhibit the works of young Venetian artists. Initially, the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna (Gallery of Modern Art) fulfilled this condition by exhibiting paintings and sculpture from the Biennale, an international art event. Additional acquisitions and donations have helped to turn the museums into an exemplary example of art.
The museum was closed for a period, but was reopened in 2002. the building had been restored during its closure and now retains it's classic elegance. The works are well presented and there are excellent views of the surrounding area from the building.
