 Introduction
Cassano allo Ionio is a small town in Southern Italy, known to the Romans as Cassanum. The town lies on a fertile region at the foot of a steep mountain. Cassano is one of the most important agricultural and trade centers. It is well-known for its citrus groves, Pollino wine and the production of fine cheeses like pecorino, butirri and ricotta cheeses.
Its position also makes Cassano an excellent home base in which to enjoy both the mountains and the sea. Cassano is also the home of warm sulphurous springs that make up popular bath houses.

 History and Culture
The town of Cassano allo Ionio is first mentioned in 1059. Cassano was the ancient town of Cosa founded by the Enotri five centuries before the destruction of Troia. An important trading center, the town was first noted for it location during the Saracen defeat of Byzantine forces under Pothos in 1031. Its history has been greatly intertwined with the nearby town of Sibari. The Sibariti were, in fact, the builders of the first thermal establishments which Cassano has now become well-known for.
Today's Cassano is a modern town which developed with the return of the emigrants. Its climate is very pleasant and its location near the Pollino and the Ionian Seas paired with its famous sulphurous water springs has allowed the town to gain a reputation as a tourist and health center.
Its historical centre is very characteristic of the area, full of churches, palaces and fountains.
 Churches and Museums
Cassano Cathedral
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, there is a piece called Madonna of the Purity and a Crocifisso made of wood from 1400 within. The cathedral itself was re-built in 1795, but the bell tower appears older and probably dates from 1608. Also inside, there are 15th and 16th century frescoes, fine marble, a 16th century painting of the Neapolitan school, and 18th century paintings. The medieval crypt has Byzantine style frescoes and a wooden 15th century Crucifix.
Diocesano Museum
This Archeological museum preserves works from the area including a Madonna with the Child, manuscripts, books and paintings from the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries.
Church of the Cappuccini
Precious works from the XVIII and XIX century are kept here. The annexed convent today accommodates a hostel, both founded in 1560.
 Historical Buildings and Monuments
Tower
This former defensive tower rises above the town. It is from this point that a stone was thrown which killed Milo. Today, the site offers the ruins of the medieval castle and a panoramic view of the town and the surrounding areas.
Sybaris
This was a celebrated city of Magna Graecia that has since been destroyed. The city was exceptionally wealthy in the 6th century BC and the term Sybarites became synonymous with pleasure and luxury. A modern town now lies on the ruins, but ruins can still be observed near Cassano allo Ionio.
 Spas
The combination of wonderful weather, proximity to the seas, and excellent waters has made Cassano a beautiful spot to enjoy the spa. The sulphurous waters of the Cassano Baths or Sibarite Baths are said to be good for respiratory ailments and some forms of deafness, as well as other health problems.
