 History and Culture
Cittanova was founded as an agricultural community in August, 12th 1618. At that time the town was called "Nuovo Casal di Curtuladi". It had suffered several disasters including an earthquake and the Black Death at the beginning of the XVII century. It was rebuilt with the name "Casalnuovo" and on April 2nd 1852 it was renamed by Ferdinando II di Borbone with the present name of "Cittanova".
On February 5th, 1783 the town suffered its most violent earthquake locally called "The Scourge". The quake destroyed the town and many other nearby towns. More than 2 thousand people died and only the monumental fountain "Dell'Olmo", built 1730 remained intact.
 Churches and Museums
Chiesa del Rosario - The foundation of this church was constructed by Don M. Siciliani on May 7th, 1823. It is in baroque style and is a protected building. The church features beautiful frescos by Colloca and Brunetto Aloi and wooden statues.
Chiesa Matrice - Built during the XVII century, this church has beautiful wooden statues of the patron San Girolamo and of the Risen Christ by Domenico de Lorenzo. There are also wooden statues called "Varette" made between 1821 and 1893 by the sculptor F. Biangardi which represent the stages of the Passion of Christ. At Easter these statues are exposed in the church and on Good Friday they are used in a procession.
The Civil Museum of Natural History - This museum was inaugurated on July 29th, 1996 and soon it became an important cultural destination. The exhibits are skillfully restored with modern techniques. The geological and petrographical and mineralogical departments offer a variety of samples, some of which originated from the Aspromonte. In the botanical department you can see examples of lichen, musk, ferns, gymnosperm and angiosperm. The zoological department offers a rich collection of anemic vertebrates of South-Italy and of other European and non-European countries.
