Introduction
Gallipoli is a town of some 21,000 inhabitants in the province of Lecce. It is located by the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula. The town of Gallipoli is divided in two parts, the modern and the old city. The new town includes all the newest buildings including a skyscraper. The old town, instead, is located on a limestone island, linked to the mainland by a bridge built in the 16th century and full of narrow winding alleys which almost burst into the houses, bastions, castle and churches.

Arrival
Nearest airports are Brindisi (88 km) and Bari (200 km). Gallipoli can be reached from both of them via a modern freeway, the state road 101.The closest Railway station is located in Lecce. There is a local train connection between Lecce and Gallipoli. By car take the motorway SS. 16 up to Brindisi, then the SS. 613 to Lecce. Before entering Lecce take the TANGENZIALE OVEST to Gallipoli.

History and Culture
Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek “Kallipolis”which means “Beautiful City”. Similarly to the Turkish town of this same name, Gallipoli occupies a strategic location and thus was repeatedly attacked through the centuries by the usual European conquest culprits (Normans (1071), the Venetians (1484), the British in 1809 and of course the Turks and Spaniards).

Life in Gallipoli revolves around its fishing trade. Every day fisherman sail out under the harbour bridge returning at every night where they pull their brightly coloured boats up the sandy shore.

Churches and Museums
Cathedral of Sant'Agate
In the heart of the city one of the more important churches for the gallipolini rises, construction began in 1629, in the Baroque period. Built in same place where centuries before rose a medieval church destroyed in the 17th century.

Historical buildings and monuments
Angioinian Castle
Dating back to 1281 is indeed stately; it is situated on the eastern side of the city and dominates the bridge, the harbor, and the sea in all its grandeur. This building is one of the rarest castles directly overlooking the sea.

Greek fountain
Greco-Roman fountain is the oldest fountain built in Italy. Located at the entrance of the walled town, this fountain - despite its name - is thought to belong to the roman imperial time. It's adorned with legendarious figures belonging to the classic period.

Places of Interest
Gallipoli boasts a very recently built harbour for private boats, located just steps from the bottom of the main Corso Roma.

Events
Numerous are also the celebrations (civil and religious), some of which are quite spectacular. Worth mentioning are: the carnival, Easter and all the parades, Sant'Agata, Premio Barocco, the Chess challenge. Unmissable are the Santa Cristina celebrations, in July, when for three days the town is literally bursting with market stalls, luminaries, fireworks displays, parades in the historic town, and a colourful cheering crowd.

St. Orontius - August 24-26 - Lecce
Lecce celebrates its patron saint, St Oronzo, from the 24th to the 26th of August. On this occasion the town puts on its Sunday best: processions, illuminations and fireworks.
