Travel Guide

Introduction
A peculiar green light that casts an eerie emerald glow over impressive formations of stalagmites and stalactites, many of them underwater, inspired the name of the Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto). It is placed in one of the best bays of the Coast, “Conca dei Marini”. The sun light comes in, through a tunnel under the water (the tunnel connects the cave to the open sea), which is what makes the emerald colour. The water is so clear that it is possible to see through to the bottom 10meters below.

History
The Grotta dello Smeraldo became a marine cave as a result of changing ground levels due to the influence of vocanoes in the region. In the beginning the cave was above the sea and during this age, stalactites and stalagmites took shape. Slowly, when the sea level rose on the coast, the cave was partially flooded by the sea. Today, the cave is connected to the sea through a tunnel 12 meters long and at 4 meters deep. The cave was discovered, more than 60 years ago, by a local fisherman in 1932.

Location
Address: Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, Italy.
Directions: The “grotta dello Smeraldo” is five Km from Amalfi, following the “Strada Statale 163” to Positano.
How to reach it: You can reach the “Grotta dello Smeraldo” by boat, bus and car. Boat tours leave from the Amalfi seafront regularly, according to demand. You can also park at the signposts for the grotto along the coast road and take an elevator down.

Whats to see
At the entrance a raft gets you in the cavern which, like magic, turns into a fantastic green temple full of figures, caryatids and bas-reliefs formed by dripping water from the vaulted ceilings, over the thousands of years. The most surprising thing, however, is offered by a number of study stalagmitic structures rising from the sea which would never have formed if the cave had not previously been on dry ground. These stalagmites can now be found in the water because the Brady seism made the ground subside and carry the lower part of the cavern into the sea. An interesting feature you are able to see about 4 meters deep under the water, is a special Christmas Crib in ceramics, given to the local fishermen.
