 Introduction
Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, or the National Museum of Magna Grecia, is an Italian archaeological museum in Reggio Calabria with a collection from various sites in Magna Grecia. There are rich displays of jewelry, bronze mirrors, coins and medals. This is also the city art gallery until a separate museum is built for dedicated to it.
The Riaci Bronzes are the most impressive feature of the collection. These dazzling bronze statues, known as the "Bronzi di Riace", were found off the east coast of Calabria in 1972. It is unclear where exactly the statues are from. The most accepted explanation is that one of the figures is a cannibal, and the other is his philosophical brother. The complete restoration of the two bronzes lasted five years they were finally revealed on August 3, 1981.
Since 1981, the museum houses a section devoted to underwater archaeology. Based on the finding of the bronze statues, there is a permanent display of underwater finds. Materials from a wreck off Porticello, in the Straits of Messina, are displayed. Known as the Philosopher's Head, the bronze statue appears deep in thought. Marble Reggio Kouros are one of the most recent acquisitions. They were shown at the 2006 Winter Olympics at Turin as the archetype of a victorious Greek athlete.
The museum is open 9am to 1:30 pm and then 2:30 pm to 7 pm. It is closed the first and third Monday of each month.
 History
The building was designed by Marcello Piacentini and built between 1932 and 1941. The building holds a massive volume and has a ground floor in bugnato black lava stone. Grand travertine pilasters and large windows illuminate the first floor exhibition galleries. Though not designed as galleries, many rooms on the ground floor have been opened to the public. The museum has expanded to every room in the 3 floor structure, as well as the basement.
The start of the collection came from the city's Museo Civico. It has been added to by various discoveries in the region. Parts of the ancient city states of Calabria, Basilicata and Sicily by the Soprintendenza Archeologica della Calabria are featured in the museum today. There are also several objects from the prehistoric and protohistoric periods. Not only are the displays interesting, they are an important glimpse into history.
