 Introduction
This beautiful monastery seems more like a palace than its chaste function suggests. The church is a masterpiece of baroque decoration with a marble floor and works from artists such as Jusepe de Ribera, Giuseppe Sanmartino, and Battistello Caracciolo. The Quarto del Priore is an elegant apartment used for the reception and is now home to artworks such as Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino by Pietro Bernini.
The museum is with the monastery and contains several sections. The presepi section is full of manger scenes and lies off of the Chiostro dei Procuratori. There is a presepio Cuciniello, created in 1879 with a collection of 18th-century figures and accessories. One of the most impressive pieces is the Cappella del Tesoro, with Luca Giordano's ceiling fresco of Judith holding aloft Holofernes's head. There is also a masterpiece by Il Ribera over the altar. Special exhibits of Naples are on the first and second floors and consist of paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and precious objects. The second floor offers a library of prints and drawings and has over 8,000 pieces. In the Gothic cellars of the monastery there are additional sections dedicated to sculpture and epigraphy.
Various rooms offer a variety of collections. Room 24 has an 18th century scale model of the monastic complex, while Room 26 has 19th century paintings of monastic life. Room 37 has gruesome and interesting paintings depicting the plague. The museum offers a thorough look at the art and history of wonderful Naples.
Admission is 6 euros, which includes entry to Castle Sant Elmo. Audio guides are an additional 4 euros. The museum is open from Tuesday to Thursday, 8:30am til 7pm.
 History
The building was constructed in 1325 as a Carthusian monastery. The Baroque style was set by Cosimo Fanzago who was lead architect, sculptor, and decorator. The monastery is testament to his talent, despite allegations that he may have been mad.
The monastery underwent a period of suppression in 1861. The monastery had been designed so lavishly that Ferdinand IV was threatening to halt the order's government subsidy. He was jealous of the regal estate that had previously been honored by royal patronage of Charles of Anjou.
Gothic style was traded for Neapolitan Baroque because of various additions in the 17th and 18th century. Sculptures and painters from these periods were also added. Angevin heritage can still be observed from the pointed arches and cross-vaulted ceiling of the Certosa Church, but the style is much different then originally constructed.
The monastery and museum are an excellent introduction to monastic life and the heritage of Carthusians and San Martino. The site also offers a wonderful view of the city below.
