 What's to see
The collection is enormous, with early examples from the Neoclassical period, including some fine portraits, through the contemporary period. The 75 rooms of the massive building in which it is housed present a survey of Italian and foreign painting and sculpture since 1800. The 19th century works are mostly those of the Macchiaioli (Florentine impressionist painters), a similar movement to puntinismo (pointillism), a style based on the use of spots of colour to create paintings whose subjects were distinguishable only from a certain distance. Notable among the non-Italian artists are Degas, Cézanne, Mondrian and Van Gogh (The Gardener).
Other items of particular interest are sculpture by Marino Marini and Giacomo Manzù and paintings by Giogio de Chirico. Look for Modigliani's La Signora dal Collaretto and large Nudo. There are also many works of Italian optical and pop art. Surrealism and expressionism are well represented by Klee, Ernst, Braque, Miro, Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Pollock. The gallery courtyard, displaying Antoine Bourdell's Bowman and other important sculptures, including one by Canova, amongst the ivy and roses, is an attractive setting. Among the 20th century artists are works from De Chirico, Carrà, Sironi, Casorati, Marini and many others. You can see the collection of graphics, the storage rooms, and the Department of Restoration by appointment Tuesday through Friday.
