Introduction
Named after a 14th century hospital which was established by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, Ospedaletti is a little fishing village on the Riviera dei Fiori between Capo Sant'Ampelio and Capo Nero, only five kilometers from San Remo. Renowned for its flower growing industry, Ospedaletti boasts one of the regions most temperate climates. Roses and carnations grow in abundance in the fields surrounding the village, which was the home of Europe's first flower market.

The European elite flocked to Ospedaletti in the late 1800s when a resort was established. They frequented Italy's first casino, which opened in the late 1800s, at the Villa Sultana. In 1947 a racetrack was constructed, attracting the world's top race car drivers in the mid-20th century.

Ospedaletti's beautiful beach is one of the town's main attractions, but the beautiful surrounding landscape certainly contribute to its many pleasures. Visitors can enjoy walks amid the fragrant eucalyptus, sweeping palms, and gorgeous flowers in Ospedaletti's forests and gardens.

History and Culture
Around 1300, the Knights of Rodi constructed a church which they dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The church contained a shelter where pilgrims could stay, and a hospital for the nearby villages. Eventually, settlers began to build homes near the church, giving rise to the town of Ospedaletti. The inhabitants fished, farmed the land, produced olive oil, and grew lemons. Today, the church is called Saint Erasmo's, it was renamed for the patron saint of sailors.

In the 19th century, Ospedaletti became a popular seaside resort for Europe's rich and royal. Even the Czar of Russia spent his holidays here. With its casino and race track, the town was a bustling destination during this period. The excitement has calmed a bit, allowing for a relaxed getaway at a coastal gem, full of exquisite old villas and promenades.

Constructed in 1500, this church was made bigger in 1817. The opening to the “Sentiero dei Pali” mule path is located here.

Villa Sultana
This once grand, but now abandoned and deteriorating villa was home to Italy's first casino in the late 1800s. The architect Brasini designed the elegant belle epoque structure which opened in 1884. In 1905 the casino was closed, and the building became a private club. The villa became a private residence after World War II, and in the 1960s it was abandoned.

Defense System
Only two towers, built in the 16th century, remain of Ospedaletti's defense system, constructed in the middle ages to help protect the town against pirate raids. One is in the shape of a quadrangle, and the other overlooks the bay.
