Introduction
Commonly known as Reggio Calabria or Reggio, this is a city in southern Italy. It is also the largest and oldest city in the Calabria region. Once the capital city of Calabria, it still serves as the headquarters of the Calabrian Regional Council.

Despite the city's ever growing size, Reggio maintains a country feel. Approximately 180,000 people live within the city and the local population are known as Reggians. Reggio is also a port city with a strong fishing industry. More recently, the surrounding waters have drawn in more tourists than fish. It has been called "Italy's most beautiful kilometer" by Gabriele D'Annunzio.

History
The city is over 2,700 years old. It was founded in 720 BC by the Greeks as Rhegion, meaning "it breaks away". It became a well established settlement of Magna Graecia and continued to grow under the Roman Republic as Rhegium Juliumand and during the Byzantine Empire. It was during this time that Reggio emerged as the capital of the Duchy of Calabria. It was later incorporated into the Kingdom of Sicily, and then the Kingdom of Naples, before Italian unification.

Natural disaster decimated the city several times. Several major earthquakes damaged the city and associated tsunamis added to the devastation. The worst quakes were in 1783 and on December 28th, 1908. About 80 percent of all buildings in Reggio collapsed and thousands of people were killed. The 1908 quake remains the worst on record in modern western European history.

The city is renowned for being the location of the first dated Hebrew book, a Rashi commentary on the Pentateuch. This was printed in 1475, but some scholars consider Rome as the city where Hebrew printing began.

Location
Located at the very tip of the toe of the Italian peninsula boot, Reggio di Calabria is at the base of the Aspromonte mountains.

Ferries offer access Messina from the west pier at the end of Via Florio about once an hour, or every 2-3 hours on Sunday.

Trains stop at Lido, and the main harbor in the south end of town. The main station has a small tourist office that offers maps of the town.
