 Introduction
On the eastside of the Sila Grande and between the rivers of Neto and Arvo is San Giovanni in Fiorre. It is the oldest, largest and most important center of the Sila and is an indispensable stop to understand the region. Its location also allows for quick transfers to the cities of Cosenza and Crotone. There are three great lakes nearby, Ampolino, Arvo and Volturino. These mountain lakes offer a peaceful air and unique beauty.
The town's name and its history are tied to Giacchino da Fiore. He was the founder of the Florens Order of the Capuchin, which started with the construction of the church. The town grew and developed around this organization.
Crafts are an important element of the town. The Goldsmith trade is legendary here. Woven works such as bedspreads, trousers, and other materials are also created here. This tradition of hand crafts has evaporated over time, but is an intricate part of the society and is making a comeback with the requests by tourists. Poet Rina Ferrarelli is from the town and in the poem My Hometown describes her nostalgia for her hometown and her pride in her roots.

San Giovanni was founded in the XIII century around the Florens Abbey built by Joachim of Flora. Joachim was a medieval mystic and Cistercian monk who was well-known for his books about the prophecy of the salvation of the human race. He proposed the creation of a new and stricter order which was called Florens after the name of the place where he believed the salvation of the human race would start. Pope Celestine III approved his proposal and the Abbey was built in 1198.
Today San Giovanni is an active town with handicrafts and traditional folklore. Filled with monuments from throughout the ages, the town is a place of culture and learning.
