Travel Guide

Introduction Introduction
San Lucido is perched on an out-cropping just above the Tyrrhenian Sea. On clear days visitors can look out from the town and see the Eolian Islands. The rich history of the area can be seen in the unique architecture of the buildings and the beach is a luxury that brings in many visitors. These shores have seen a procession of conquers, but the town seems happy now to relax on its lofty position above the sea.

History and Culture History and Culture
San Lucido's history is expansive and it pre-dates the Romans and even the Greeks. Archeological findings have found that San Lucido was inhabited by the “Bruti”, a native tribe who battled the Greeks and then joined them in fighting to keep out the Romans. Various examples of their civilization including vases, coins, and common household utilities have all been found in and around San Lucido from each of the succeeding empires. San Lucido has been ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, French, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish empires as it has a valuable position on the “toe” of the Italian peninsula.

The name “San Lucido” is taken from a monk who inhabited the town's monastery. The literal meaning of “Lucido” is “lucid” and important religious monuments are an important part of the cultural landscape throughout the town.
