 Introduction
The Venice train station is called Venezia Santa Lucia (S. Lucia), though it's also referred to as the ferrovia, which simply means railway. It is a large white building located on an island at the beginning of the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce area of the city. It is easy to reach the city center on foot walking down the Strada Nuova or by taking the Vaporetto (public water bus) or a private taxi boat from one of the jetties that are opposite the station.
The station's façade is decorated with the logo of the FS, or Ferrovie dello Stato, a.k.a. Italian State Railways. It is a modern structure compared to all the more historical buildings surrounding it, and was built on the site of the Santa Lucia church from which its name derives from.
Santa Lucia is the only railway station on the island of Venice (Mestre station is on the other side of the Ponte Della Liberta (Freedom Bridge) on the mainland). A shuttle train service operates between Santa Lucia and Venezia Mestre.
The station is used by an average of 82 thousand people per day, totaling about 30 million per year; with around 450 trains per day. The public transport system in its vicinity consists solely of vaporetto boat-transport lines along the Grand Canal, while the urban and extra-urban road transport lines are concentrated in Piazzale Roma.
 History
The architect Angelo Mazzoni was the first person who developed plans for the Venezia Santa Lucia Station in 1924 and studied possible solutions for over a decade. A design competition was launched in 1934 for the railway station's construction. It was won by the architect Virgilio Vallot, whose project remained suspended until 1936, when it was decided that Mazzoni and Vallot should work together on the construction of the travelers' building front block, which continued until 1943. While Mazzoni redesigned the railway facilities building. The final solution was completed after the second world war, on the basis of a project drafted by the architect Paolo Perilli.
