Introduction
Borghetto di Vara is a small town of 996 inhabitants in the province of La Spezia and is about 70 km southeast of Genoa. The municipality of Borghetto di Vara contains the frazioni (subdivisions) of Boccapignone, Cassana, L'Ago, Pogliasca, Ripalta, and Termine di Roverano.

The town is known for its ancient archetecture which after years of neglect, is receiving some much needed renovation. The name of the city indicates its ancient function as a “street village”.

Car
Borghetto Vara is located between the Provincial Road 1 Aurelia and the Provincial Road 566 in the Val di Vara. The town may also be reached by Highway A12, exit at Brugnato-Borghetto di Vara.

History and Culture
The history of the town can be traced back to the sull'antica Roman road which drew through the town. The road brought trade and prosperity, but after the Middle Ages, the road was re-directed through the valley. Much of the population of the town followed the re-location of the road and the town fell into a time of disparity.

The town was further forgotten by the Via Aurelia, the main route of communication between Genoa and Rome, lost prominence due to the construction of the railway tirrenica. The railway was completed in 1874 and a more popular highway, the A12, was completed in 1970.

The historic centre of the town was also badly damaged by bombing in WWII. Careful restoration has taken place to bring back the former glory of the town.

Churches and Museums
St. Charles Borromeo
The bell of the church was destroyed by the bombardments of the WWII and has been re-constructed.

Abbey of Santa Maria dell'Accola
This abbey dates back to 881 and was mentioned in a decree by the Emperor Charles the Grosso.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Roverano
Located among the olive trees and chestnuts, the sanctuary was created after a Marian apparation (a vision in which people claim to have had Mary, the mother of Jesus, contact them with their words or gestures). According to a popular 16th Century story, two shepherdesses around Mount Roverano encountered Virgin Mary when she asked one of them, mute since birth, to call the local parish priest to a paticular olive tree. On the tree was a picture of Mary. The people built a sanctuary to honor Mary and the story.
