Introduction
Situated at the foot of a densely wooded valley, Levanto is a natural paradise. Pine and olive trees surround the lovely town, and the Mediterranean Sea laps its beautiful sandy beach. Surfers and sunbathers flock here in summer, and even the winters enjoy a moderate climate.

Approximately 60 km from Genoa, Levanto is located within the coastal region of the Comunita Montana della Riviera Spezzina, and parts of the town lie within the boundaries of the Cinque Terre National Park.

History and Culture
Evidence exists of a small group that settled in the area during Roman times, called Ceula. The region became known for the good defense system it had in place against invading pirates. The town was ruled by the Malaspina family, then the Da Passano family, before falling under Genoese rule in 1229. Levanto was a center for commerce during the Middle Ages, mostly because of its proximity to the sea, and the Via Francigena which was a valuable road allowing for good communication with the rest of the region. The village developed rapidly in the centuries after Medieval times, and continued to grow throughout the 1970s.
