Introduction
Situated 819 m. above sea level, on the hills overlooking the high valley of the Basento River, this is the highest chief town in the Italian provinces, second only to Enna (Sicily).
Potenza, and its mild climate, as the capital city of Basilicata, is a growing university town with a very vibrant and friendly atmosphere. You may find it very compelling if only for a visit, as you will rediscover the spectacular and earthquake fractured landscape, consisting of rugged mountains and wide, life rich valleys where the people have endured and have farmed for centuries. The “modern” rebuilt city, features many apartment buildings, office complexes and light industrial establishments but also much of its medieval aspect, spreads over several hills.

The quickest way to reach Potenza is by the A3 tollway from Naples, which takes two to three hours. Leave the Autostrada at the Lagonegro Nord/Maratea exit and Take exit Potenza Centro toward Potenza.

History and Culture
Potenza, settled by the Lucanians who, in the 3rd Century BC, took refuge here after the Romans destroyed other parts of what was then Lucania. However, by the 2nd Century BC, it fell under Roman rule. But the Romans, lost their empire, and the city was taken over by the Goths, then over time and through the centuries fell under the control of succeeding powers: the Lombards, Byzantines, Normans, Holy Roman Empire, the Aragonese and the Bourbons. In 1860, it was annexed to Italy.

Long prone to damage from earthquake, it was completely shaken by an earthquake in 1694, and another one in 1980. Between this time , the allies completely devastated Potenza with heavy air bombardments in 1943 during the 2nd World War. In 1980, another strong earthquake struck Potenza.

Churches and Museums
