Introduction
Aosta (French: Aoste) is the principal city of the bilingual Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps, 48 miles north-northwest of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, and the at the confluence of two rivers, the Buthier and Dora Baltea, and at the junction of the Great and Little St. Bernard routes. The Romans built on a simple grid, with two roads intersecting at right angles, with gates in the walls leading into the city along them. A small city, Aosta has not suffered the terrible devastations that have been inflicted elsewhere by passing armies, or by the earthquakes that have shaken other parts of Italy. There is a spacious, and timeless alpine feeling throughout the city, particularly in and around its principal piazza, the Piazza Chanoux.

History and Culture
Aosta was settled in proto-historic times and later became a Celtic-Ligurian city of the Salassi. Terentius Varro captured it in 25 BC and founded the Roman colony. Augustus founded a city. He gave it his name and stationed there three thousand soldiers of the praetorian cohorts: hence the name Augusta Praetoria Salassorum. It was the mark of Roman military colonisation: a strategic centre to guard and take advantage of the most important passes between Italy and what is now France and Switzerland. After 11 BC Aosta became the capital of the Alpes Graies (“Grey Alps”) province of the Empire.

After the fall of the Western Empire, the city was conquered by the Burgundians, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines. The Lombards, who had annexed it to their Italian kingdom, were expelled by the Franks of Pepin the Younger. Under Charlemagne Aosta acquired importance as a post on the Via Francigena, leading from Aachen to Italy. After 888 it was part of the renewed Kingdom of Italy under Arduin of Ivrea and Berengar of Friuli.

In the 10th century Aosta became part of the Kingdom of Burgundy. After the fall of the latter in 1032, it entered the lands of Umberto I Biancamano of the House of Savoy . After the creation of the county of Savoy, with its capital in Chambery, Aosta followed its history, as well as the later Kingdom of Sardinia and unified Italy. Under the House of Savoy Aosta was granted a special status that it maintained when the new Italian Republic was proclaimed in 1948.

Born at the peak of an extraordinary town-planning experimentation, Aosta holds and synthesises the best architectural aspects of the Roman empire; it constitutes a sort of ideal city, a model which is still visible today in the preservation of the original layout with the historic center of Aosta containing some quite well preserved Roman structures.

Churches and Museums
Chiesa San Stefano
San Stefano had a facade added in the 18th century. Inside, there is a frescoe cycle consisting of 10 panels celebrating the life of the saints. Also inside, is a large statue of San Cristoforo carved out of a section of walnut tree with a diameter of one and a half meters.

Cathedral
The cathedral, was erected in the 11th and 12th centuries; the present church originates from the 15th-16th centuries. It has a Renaissance facade (c. 1526) with a classical porch, added in 1837. The treasury houses the ivory diptych of the Emperor Honorius (406). On the west side of the cathedral are remains of the Roman forum.

Collegiata di Sant'Orso
Starting outside the medieval walls of the old city, you will find the Collegiata di Sant'Orso, is a large complex including a church, bell tower and monastery, mostly in the Romanesque style. The bell tower (campanile) stands at 46 meters high, and has four floors with mullioned windows near its top. It was built between 994 and 1025AD, (with some rebuilding in the 15th century) and it is probably the most important medieval building in the city. The Gothic interior of the church, which contains a remarkable wooden choir (14th century) is decorated with frescoes, some of which date to the 11th century. Below is a crypt with five small aisles, dating to the same period. The right aisle has doors to the Romanesque cloisters, probably added in the 12th Century.

Basilica of San Lorenzo
Is a little late-gothic church worth a visit.

Archeological Museum
In Via S Orso in Aosta can be found the Archeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Regionale) containing relics and artifacts the Roman and medieval periods, but also some that originate at a much earlier time, when the area was under settlement by the Salassi.

The Augustian Arch (the entry to the town since the beginning of time) was erected in 35 BC to celebrate the victory of the Roman troops led by consul Varro Murene over the local Salassi.

Torre dei signori di Sant'Orso
The tower to the right of the gate is the Torre dei signori di Sant'Orso, a building used during medieval times by the Signori who ran local government. The lower floor has been renovated as an exhibition space.

Roman theatre
The Roman theatre, of which the southern facade remains today is 22 meters high actually four stories high and it is protected by a scaffolding structure in an attempt to preserve its integrity. The majestic facade (which is still visible), of the main rectangular body of the building which surrounded the semicircular cave, gives weight to the hypothesis of a covered theatre. The structure could contain up to 4,000 spectators. In the neighboring garden of a monastery there are some arches of the amphitheater.

Torre dei Belivi
The Torre dei Belivi, near the theater was a governor's residence in its early days, but has also servered as a court and later a prison.

Torre Fromage
Named for its original owners is alongside the Amphitheater and currently hosts art exhibits.

Beyond Chaptillon the Aosta valley road affords open views of the fertile valley and the mountains around Aosta, with the three-peaked Rutor in the background. Further on, above the mouth of the Val de Clavalité or Val de Fénis, in which the snowy peak of the Tersiva can be seen, stands the mighty castle of Fénis on the left (1330, with later additions) with a beautiful courtyard (15th century) and wall paintings; inside there are 15th century frescoes.
