History and Culture
Holding an important strategic position in antiquity due to its position above the roads and river leading to the Val Vomano basin, Atri was originally a principal Greek harbor. The Romans prevailed around and named the city Hatria around 300 BC, not without it first having been ravaged by Hannibal during the Second Punic War. Many historians believing that this word was the origin for the name Adriatic Sea. After the fall of Rome, the region was subjected to a long period of violent conflict ending in subsequent periods of occupation under the Langobards and a long and splendid era under the noble Norman Acquaviva family, the region eventually fell under the reign of the Kingdom of Naples before eventually being integrated into the modern Italian state.

Atri's beautiful and narrow cobblestone streets contribute to the visitor's relaxing stay, the surrounding picturesque landscape also being an interesting mix of gullies, stony paths, hillsides and caves. The remains of the city's three ancient gates, Capo d'Atri, Porta Macelli and Porta San Domenico are open to the public and offer an insight into Atri's medieval period. Sections of a complicated system of underground passages for collecting and storing water are visible in the eastern part of town. Enjoy the beautiful Fonte Pila and Fonte della Strega fountains at the town's historical center. Fans of the Baroque period should visit the stairway at the Chiesa San Franscesco. For art fans, the Museo Capitolare and the works by Giacomo Farelli in the Chiesa San Domenico are a must. There are an impressive number of ancient attractions and alleyways to wander through, local shops selling glassware produced here, the remains of a Roman amphitheater and the beautiful public garden, The Villa Comunale, with an abundance of shade trees. Once you have had your fill of ruins and museums, enjoy the expansive view of the valleys and sea below from the Belvedere near Viale Vomano, or just in a nearby café and watch the bustling Italian life around you.
