 Introduction
On the southernmost part of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano, on the Cape of Polinuro, lies a wonderful town called Camerota. Because this region is rather difficult to get to, it enjoys an exclusive level of tourism. The village of Camerota is perched on a hill, enjoying grand views of the sea. Its incredibly verdant landscape is filled with ancient olive trees, and long leisurely walks prove most pleasant. But the real treasure of Camerota is its port. Just five kilometers down the hillside, Marina di Camerota surrounds a lovely bay. Visitors can enjoy a stroll around the harbor, a pleasant day at the beach, or an adventurous trek to the multitude of caves found in the region.
Marina di Camerota is an important fishing area for this part of Italy. The local waters are full of anchovies, swordfish, and tuna. In addition to fishing, Camerota is known for its production of ceramics. Artisans began creating clay vases, jugs, and other objects here in the 1800s.

 History and Culture
Camerota was most likely founded around the 7th century B.C. by the Greeks. It is said that the name of the town resembles the Greek word Kamaroton, and was given this name because of the profusion of caves found here. From around a central castle the town took shape. It was surrounded by a wall with three gates, the Suso Gate, the Holy Mary Gate, and the Holy Nicola Gate.
Camerota was an easy point of invasion for the Saracens, during the Middle Ages when they attacked all the towns and villages along the Italian Mediterranean coastline, and its castle became famous as a Saracen stronghold in the region.
In 1552 Camerota was destroyed by a Turkish army. It was later ruled by various families, until 1647 when one of the leaders, Paolo Marchese was killed in a violent uprising.
