 Introduction
A tranquil oasis on Italy's Riviera di Levante, Moneglia is situated on a beautiful Mediterranean gulf. Its named is derived from the Latin world for jewel, monilia, because this town is truly a gem of Liguria. The hills surrounding Moneglia are full of olive groves, and rich vegetation, making a perfect destination for those in search of a dazzling ocean-lined terrain.
The painter Luca Cambiaso was born in Moneglia in 1527. Masterpieces of his creation, including a version of The Last Supper, and the Adoration of the Wisemen hang in two of the local churches. The poet Felice Romani was also born in Moneglia, in the late 18th century. A scholar of mythology and literature, he also penned many librettos in his lifetime, writing frequently for famous Italian opera composers like Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini.
Moneglia is renowned for its crystal clear waters. And the town's gorgeous beaches are an ideal place to while away a summer afternoon, basking in the Mediterranean sun. Of course once you get your fill, Moneglia's many historical and cultural aspects await.
 Arrival
Plane
Genoa's (GOA) Aeroporto Di Genova is a logical arrival point for international travelers. The airport accomodates flights from around Italy, as well as many cities throughout Europe. Ryanair runs direct flights from London Stanstead to Genoa, and Lufthansa runs three daily flights out of Munich.
Train
From Genoa, the train to Moneglia takes just over an hour. The journey on a local trains from La Spezia is about 35 to 55 minutes.
Car
55 km from Genoa, Moneglia lies just off the A12/E80 motorway. Exit at Sestri Levante and continue to Via Borgio Bo. Follow signs to Moneglia, you'll pass through a long tunnel before arrival.
 History and Culture
Moneglia fell under Genoese rule in the 12th century. It was a fortunate event because the town was given aid to defend itself against the frequent pirate raids. During this period, the Castle of Monleone was constructed, with a reinforced fortification added in the 15th century with the addition of the Castle of Villafranca.
In 1284 Moneglia was involved in the battle of Meloria. This battle was a culmination of a rivalry between Pisa and Genoa that had lasted many ages. Florence and Lucca later became involved in the fight against Pisa, ultimately resulting in that Republic's downfall.
Thirty-seven Moneglians lost their lives in World War I. During the second world war, the town was heavily bombed. Residents found protection in the tunnels that lie between Moneglia and Sestri Levante.
 Churches and Museums
Church of Santa Croce
First established in 1130, a choir loft was added to this church in 1300, and in 1725 it was rebuilt again. Its courtyard features a wonderful display of colorful stones, and inside, hang paintings by the celebrated local artist Luca Cambiaso, including his version of The Last Supper. Don't miss the church's beautiful Byzantine cross.
Church of San Giorgio
A wealth of important paintings are on view in this 1396 church, including an Adoration of the Magi by Cambiaso. Its original Gothic details were reconstructed in the early 18th century. The church includes a Franciscan cloister which was added in 1484.
The Oratory of the Disciplinanti
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary as well as the fraternity who once cared for the building, this oratory contains exquisite frescoes which depict scenes from the life of Mary, as well as the Passion of Christ.
 Historical Buildings and Monuments
Castle of Monleone
Constructed in the 12th century to help defend Moneglia from pirate raids, the remains of this medieval castle can be visited.
Villafranca Castle
This castle was built in the 15th century to help fortify the town even more, against pirate raids. It played an important role in the history of Moneglia. A visit to the castle ruins reveals breathtaking views of the coast.

The Historic Town Center
A wonderfully preserved medieval town awaits in Moneglia. Narrow streets are lined with quaint shops and picturesque homes. Have a taste of the delicious Ligurian cuisine at one of the town's fabulous restaurants.
 Events
The Pumpkin Carnival - February
Each year a grand procession takes place in Moneglia, featuring wonderfully constructed floats, clowns, and music. Local cuisine is also readily available. Legend has it, the festival arose over a peasant dispute that occurred when a pumpkin grew on the boundary between their land.
The Olive Oil Fair - April
A variety of focaccia and olive oil can be tasted at this annual event which occurs on Easter Monday.
Palco Sul Mare - Summer
Each summer free concerts of talented performers are held in Moneglia.
