Introduction

Punta Carena is situated on the far south-west of the island of Capri, on the Limmo peninsula, the name of which derives from the latin limen meaning boundary. The jagged rocks overhanging the sea, the luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation and the lighthouse itself make Carena Point one of the most beautiful spots on the island. Behind Carena point looms the precipice of the Migliora, lined with defense walls built by the British at the start of the eighteen hundreds in order to protect Capri from invasion. The sea bed around Punta Carena descends extremely rapidly and at just half a kilometer from the coast already registers a depth of circa 600 meters.

In summer a number of bathing establishments open here, all built on comfortable terraces, with iron steps providing access to the waters. Punta Carena has become a highly fashionable place; the ideal setting where to enjoy a day by the sea or where to pass an evening, with the resort staying open until late, often with live musical entertainment.

History

The Punta Carena Lighthouse is approximately a hundred and fifty years old, built in 1866 it stands on the rocky promontory named Punta Carena (Carena =keel because it looks like the keel of a ship). The lighthouse, an octagonal tower, is among the most important in the Tyrrhenian sea, and second only to that of Genoa as far as lighting capacity is concerned.

Address: Punta Carena - Anacapri.
Directions: Take a boat onto the island of Capri.
In Marina Grande take the train up the mountain to Castiglione
From there take a bus into Anacapri. That bus route ends there.
Once off the bus continue walking up the road about 50 yards and you'll get to the bus stop for the route to take you to the lighthouse.
This route takes you down Via Nuova del Faro. At the end of the route you will be at Punta Carena and the lighthouse.

Whats to see

Particularly interesting are: the rocky indented coastline, the Mediterranean vegetation, the pine wood facing a small natural bay, the rocky ridge to the east with its so-called “Grotte dei Caciocavalli” and Torre della Guardia, the vast panorama admirable from the outermost point of the Carena, where the ruins of the fortifications of the Second World War are located, and finally the very Lighthouse, imposing over the surrounding landscape and expressing its major function as a point of reference for navigation. Here is also a wonderful seaside resort for the sun shines from dawn to sunset, take a chance to enjoy one of these breathtaking sunsets as well as the spectacular night views: the Lighthouse in operation, and the illuminated rocks.

Useful information

Tips: Here is also the departure or arrival point of a very enjoyable walk along the north-western coast of the island, known as “The Walk of the Fortifications” because it passes through the ruins of the fortifications built by the French in1808 and which have been recently restored.
