Introduction
The second biggest town in the municipality of La Spezia, Sarzana begins near the town of Marinella and stretches to the Magra River. It is an ancient town, home to an important archeological site where artifacts dating from Roman times have been discovered.

Within the great expanse of the modern city lies a wonderful historic center. Ancient walls still surround this part of town, and visitors may enter through one of two gates which are still intact, the Porta Romana, and the Porta Parma. Once inside, you'll delight at the charming streets of the medieval town, lined with lovely homes, churches, and shops.

Arrival
Plane
Both Genoa's (GOA) “Aeroporto Di Genova”, and Pisa's “Pisa International Galileo Galilei Airport” are logical arrival point for international travelers. Both airports accommodate flights from around Italy, as well as many cities throughout Europe. Ryanair runs direct flights from London Stanstead to Genoa, and Lufthansa runs three daily flights out of Munich. To Pisa, Air France, Alitalia, and EasyJet operate daily flights from Paris. And several airlines fly direct from London.

Train
The train from Pisa will get you directly to Sarzana in less than an hour. The journey from Genoa will last two hours, though there is a high speed train which takes 1.5 hours.

Car
Just 68 km from Pisa, and 100 km from Genoa, Sarzana is easy to reach by car. Exit the A12/E80 motorway at Sarzana, and follow the roads into town.

History and Culture
Dating from the Roman era, Sarzana is situated at a location that was very strategic during that time. It was a center of communication given its place near two extremely important ancient roads, the Via Aurelia, and the Via Romea. Home to the Bishops of Luni, the town was fortified in the middle ages when a wall was constructed around it. The Republic of Genoa included Sarzana within its domain, in 1748. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and finally, the Kingdom of Italy. Initially comprised of what is now considered the historic center, Sarzana began to flourish during the Renaissance, and has grown into a modern metropolis.

Churches and Museums
Church of Sant'Andrea
Built in the 10th century, the Church of Sant'Andrea is Sarzana's oldest church. In the Gothic and Baroque periods the structure was renovated, thus, visitors can view a variety of architectural details. Sculptures which date from the 16th century join important works by the painter Fiasella inside.

Cathedral of the Assumption
A beautiful rose window, marble altar constructed by Riccomani, and crucifix which was created by Guglielmo are a few of the masterpieces one finds within this 13th century church. Its architecture includes a medley of styles from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Within the Chapel of the Crucifix, located on the left side of the main altar, one of Italy's most important paintings from the Romanesque period is contained. It is a painting of Christ by Mastro Guglielmo which dates from 1138.

Historical Buildings and Monuments

Fortezza di Sarzanello
A fortified complex which lies just outside of town, Fortezza di Sarzanella is extraordinary. Named for Castruccio Castracani, it was constructed in the 14th century. Two parts make up the complex, the outer wall, known as the rivellino, and the structures within. Bridges link the various towers and buildings which comprise the fortress, and it's all surrounded by a ditch.
