Arrival Plane
The best airport to fly into is Rome Rome International Airport: Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci, www.adr.it). From Fiumicino airport take the Leonardo Express shuttle train that runs from the airport to Roma Termini station.. You can buy ticket at the airport.
Train
The easiest way of getting to Spoleto is by rail. It is on a line from Terni to Perugia. There are very limited buses. At Termini station you board the regional train for ANCONA and get off in Spoleto. You can buy ticket at the station. The distance is about 125 km and the train ride will take less than 2 hours. Trains run approximately every hour check the trenitalia site for times and to book your ticket online. The train station is in the modern part of town, below the historic centre on its hill. The distance is walkable, but since it's a fairly long walk uphill a good idea is to take the bus which runs from outside the station - buy tickets from a bar or newsstand first. The bus stops in Piazza della Liberta, close to the Tourist Information Office.
Car
Take highway A1 in the direction of Florence. Exit at Orte and follow signs to Terni and Spoleto.
History and Culture
Hannibal attacked the city after his victorious battle over the Romans at Lake Trasimeno in 217 BC, but the Spoletans withstood. So, the city remained in Roman hands until the Goths under Totila invaded in 545 BC, followed by the Longobards (Lombards) who swept down from the north and in due course established the Duchy of Spoleto (est. 570 AD) which exercised firm control over virtually all the territories east of the Tiber River.
After the passage of about 500 years of relatively stable rule, Spoleto ultimately came under the neglectful rule of the Papal States, and, with all the other lands and territories that comprised them, was made part of the modern country of Italy in 1861. During this time the city fell into a state of decline from which it only started to extricate itself in the mid 1900s.
Churches and Museums
The Duomo is one of Spoleto's finest sights. Begun in the twelfth century, the delicate-looking cathedral is set against a backdrop of hills and valleys. The Duomo is an amalgam of styles, and boasts an apse frescoed by Fra Filippo Lippi, whose tomb lies in the church.
Santa Maria della Manna d'Oro
In the piazza del Duomo next to Teatro Caio Melisso, there is an octagonal building of Bramantesque inspiration. It was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century and dedicated to the Virgin who supposedly protected the fruitful commercial transactions between the people of Spoleto and the army of Charles V after the sack of Rome in 1527. In the centre on the inside it preserves the fifteenth century baptismal font previously standing in the Eroli Chapel in the Duomo nearby. It also holds important exhibitions during the Festival of the Two Worlds.
Chiesa Sant'Ansano
Chiesa Sant'Ansano - off the Piazza D'Ansano, rebuilt in the 18th century, featuring a Madonna and Child by Lo Spagna in the aisle-less interior.
San Gregorio Maggiore
In the large Piazza Garibaldi in the northern part of the town the Romanesque church of San Gregorio Maggiore, consecrated in 1146, has a 16th century porch and an interesting interior with old frescoes.
Chiesa San Filippo Neri
Said to be Umbria's finest Baroque style church. Art works include works by Algardi, Conca and Lapis da Cagli.
San Salvatore
From the Porta Garibaldi cross the Tessino and 100m beyond the bridge turn right along the river and then left up the hill to reach the church of San Salvatore (also known as il Crocifisso), on a terrace in the Camposanto, which was originally built at the end of the 4th century within the remains of a Roman temple.
Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea
Housed in the Palazzo Rosari-Spada. Artists represented include Italians such as Leonardi, Capograssi, Burri, Accardi and international artists such as Alexander Calder. Calder's huge sculpture, Teodolapio, stands in the forecourt of the city's railway station.
Pinacoteca
The town's Pinacoteca, or art museum, occupies part of the city hall, and contains works by Umbrian masters, Artists represented include di Cesi, Vincioli, L'Alunno, Lo Spagna and others.
Historical buildings and monuments
On the Piazza della Libertà are the remains of a Roman theater (first century B.C.), which could accommodate 3,000 spectators, dating to the earliest days of the Roman empire. It has "disappeared" at various times over the centuries, but has been excavated once again and made functional. Near the amphitheater lies the entrance to the Spoleto Archeological Museum.
Rocca
A Papal fortress which was used as a prison until the 1980s The views are incredible, and the interiors are also interesting. There are some good surviving frescoes (sadly most were whitewashed out of existence during the prison era), including one that portrays Arthurian-type chivalric myth. As well as original and restored features, you can also see where the former cells were.
Ponte delle Torri
By taking a left before you reach the Rocca, you find yourself on a panoramic walk which encircles the summit. The pastoral views are complemented by modern sculptures to make the stroll more varied. After a few minutes you reach a steep wooded gorge. A massive bridge spans the chasm, the Ponte delle Torri. 755 feet long and 262 feet high, built in the fourteenth century, and defended by towers (hence the name), this functioned as both a bridge and aqueduct; apparently a route led directly up to the Rocca to allow for quick escapes over the gorge in times of siege.
The Arch of Drusus
Made of large stone blocks in A.D. 24, once formed the entrance to the Roman forum, the present Piazza del Mercato (market place), located near the Romanesque Chiesa D'Ansano.
Palazzo Comunale
uphill from the Piazza del Mercato. Only the tower remains from the original 13th century building. At the rear entrance you will find the Pinacoteca Comunale, the town's museum with many interesting artificacts and art works.
Places of Interest
From Piazza Garibaldi the Porta Garibaldi leads into the Piazza della Vittoria (gardens). Immediately east of the gate are the remains of a Roman Bridge, the Ponte Sanguinario (10m/33ft high), to which visitors can descend.
Via del Palazzo
On the lane going off the Piazza del Mercato near the Baroque wall-fountain are medieval workshops and shops (botteghe) which now house delicatessens and handicraft shops.
Events
Spoleto becomes one big stage during the first half of July, showcasing a remarkable programme of visual and performance arts. Concerts, meetings, exhibitions and screenings fill an agenda for the enjoyment of thousands across a range of venues. Typically, the programme begins with a inaugural concert on the Piazza Duomo outside the cathedral. A prelude concert and several opera performances are held in one of the town's lovely theatres. Dance performances, cinema screenings and a host of classical music performances fill more than two weeks, with a daily series of midday concerts being a particular favorite.
