History and Culture
In the XVI and XVII centuries it was sacked many times by Turkish pirates; the most dramatic incursion was that of 1554 when 7,000 inhabitants were deported and several hundred citizens were beheaded on a stone which is still preserved in the old town center. The various look-out towers along the coast and the Castello at the top of the town, built by Frederick II (1240) but re-built together with the surrounding walls in the XVI century as protection against the Turks, bear witness to this sanguinary period.

It is one of the most ancient examples of the Apulian architecture of the XI century.

Museo Civico Michele Petrone (Town Museum)
The Town Museum is very interesting. It exhibits many tomb equipments, coming from the next necropolis of San Salvatore that dated back to the IV and I century B.C.
Museo Malacologico (Malacological Museum)
The Malacological Museum exhibits 11.500 shells, that come from seas all over the world.

Museo Civico Archeologico di Vieste
The museum is located in an old olive oil mill opposite the cathedral. Finds from the local area, are exhibited (including complete sets of funereal objects) including finds that go back as much as 10,000 years. There are spearheads and arrows and Daunian stone engravings from the 4th to the 1st century B.C.
Historical Buildings and Monuments
The Castle is placed in the high area of the town. It dates back to the Normann-Swabian time; its origin is probably more ancient. Its now occupied by the military and closed to the public, though the tourist office can organise guided tours.

It is a 26 meter high enormous white monolith of rock.

Chianca Amara (Bitter Stone)
According to the folk tradition, in 1554 the town suffered the assault of the turkish pirate Dragut Rais, admiral of the Mahomet's II Ottoman fleet. The disabled and old people, who couldn't be transferred or sold as slaves, were killed on this stone that was afterwards called “bitter stone”.

Grotte (Caves)
Along the coast you can visit some delightful caves, including the Campana, Contrabbandieri, Marmi and Sogni caves.
Parco Nazionale del Gargano (Gargano National Park)
Founded in 1995 and covers a total surface area of 121,118 hectares (just under 300,000 acres). It includes most of the Gargano promontory and the lower lying marshes and flatlands. The institution of the park has lead to the protection of many rare habitats particularly under threat, from the rocky cliffs of the coastline to the dunes which surround the lagoons of Lesina and Varano. The wide, hot valleys of the southern slopes, rich in rare and endemic species of plants and animals, to the beech woods which grow at an altitude of just 300 m above sea level.
